1078. Samuel Thorne
was born on 6 Sep 1835 in Millbrook, Dutchess Co, NY. He died on 4 Jul
1915. He was buried in Woodlawn ?. He attended Yale. In 1848, at the age of
13, He selected a pony at an auction in Charleston, S.C. with his father. Father
Jonathan asked young Samuel "If I buy it will thee ride it home?".
He proceeded to ride his pony up north with his young friend age 15. Along the
way He met President Polk & his lady. He also saw & was repulsed by a
slave market in operation.
He took over the cattle breeding operation in Dutchess County from his father.
In 1868 He sold the cattle business & joined his brothers Jonathan &
William in the leather business in NY. He became president of the Pennsylvania
Coal Company, board member of Bank of America, Central Trust Company, Great Northern
Railroad, Chicago Burlington & Quincy RR, Northern Securities Company, New
York Life Insurance Company & 6th Ave RR Company. He also was vice president
of the NY Society for The Prevention of Cruelty to Children, Patron & Member
of The American Museum of Natural History, vice president of the NY Zoological
Society, Metropolitan Museum of Art & The Botannical Garden.
He built the Crest in Millbrook in 1881 on land he purchased from George Brown,
the NY banker. It was razed in 1950. Most of Harriet Van Schoonhoven's negatives
were found in this house. His hobbies included salmon fishing & quail shooting.
He died on a salmon fishing trip. He founded The Okeetee Club with others in
S.C. in 1894.
He was originally a Quaker (Birthright), then with his wife founded the Dutch
Reform Church of Milbrook, then joined the Presbytrian church in NYC. He was
tall & blue grey eyed & he resembled his sister Phebe Anna who he liked
very much. At various times in his life he saw members of 7 Generations.
Philip V. Thorne Notes: I have a photo of him from King's Notable New Yorkers
of 1896 to 1899. He was married to Phebe Van Schoonhoven (daughter of
William Henry Van Schoonhoven and Margaret Brinkerhoff)
on 2 Oct 1860. Phebe Van Schoonhoven was born on
23 Sep 1838. She died on 9 Oct 1923. She was buried in Woodlawn Cemetery?.
Philip V. Thorne Notes: According to Peter Attebury Thorne, she was a fantastic
piano player. Friend of Toscinini. He said it was the first funeral Pop went
to. & that Gramps used to hide under the piano to hear her play. Samuel
Thorne and Phebe Van Schoonhoven had the following children:
