EIGHTH GENERATION

1690. Edwin Thorne was born in 1861 in Millbrook, Dutchess Co, NY. He graduated in 1882 in Sheffield Engineering School, Yale. He died in 1935 in Babylon, NY. He was buried in Woodlawn Cemetery, Bronx, NY. He was baptized in South Side Church. He was born at the Crest in Millbrook, NY which was the other family homestead around the old Nine Partners settlement. He went to Hopkins Grammar School in New Haven. He attended Yale & graduated from Sheffield Engineering School in 1882. Moved back to Oak Neck Rd., Babylon, Long Island from Connecticut. He worked with the Mutual Life Insurance Company & the Central Hanover Bank where he became a Vice President. He had a breakdown & retired early. He kept an office & ran 25 trusts for the Family.

The gross value of his estate was appraised in 1939 at $3.7 million which went to his children & family. He was also a vice president for The Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Children. He was an avid sportsman. He bought a plantation near Fomotley near Yamassee, S.C. & had one the largest hunting preserves in the region.

He probably moved to Babylon to be near better shooting country. He used to commute to NY by train first driving to the station with a horse & buggy. He told Edwin Thorne that it took less time to commute 30 years earlier than it did in the 1940's.

He was married to Phebe Ketchum (daughter of Landon Ketchum and Ann Augusta Burritt) before 1888. Phebe Ketchum died on 3 Nov 1931. She was buried in Woodlawn Cemetery, Bronx, NY. Edwin Thorne and Phebe Ketchum had the following children:
