SIXTH GENERATION
410. Sylvanus F. Coutant
was born on 10 Jun 1849. Sylvanus was a carpenter and an apple farmer.
He and Solomon P. Thorn worked together to build homes in Clintondale.
He also played the violin. He used to go to the store down the street to pick
up something he needed, but sometimes brought back goodies, keeping them in his
pocket. His granddaughters knew he had them but he always told them they had
to dance a jig to get them. So out came the violin and the girls danced!
There was a cherry tree adjacent to the house by the kitchen window. Sylvanus
thought one of the limbs we too close to the house but Artimissa enjoyed the
shade it provided. Well, as the man of the house, Sylvanus decided to take matters
in his own hand and one day, while Artimissa was attending Quarterly Meeting,
he cut the limb off, swearing H. Marie and Gloria to secrecy ("Grandma's
going to be mad. Don't you dare tell her."). The next few days it was rainy
and the loss of the limb went unnoticed. However, the first day of sunshine
cause the children to be sent upstairs as the air in the kitchen would become
"blue".
Sylvanus F. Coutant and Artemisia Elliot had the following
children:

Jessie A. Coutant was born on 5 Apr 1895. She died on 5 Apr 1895.
